How to Compare Kasko Quotes: The Same Price, Different Cover Trap
When kasko (comprehensive motor insurance) renewal comes round, most drivers collect a few quotes and choose the cheapest. That looks sensible, but it hides a trap: two quotes can be close in price and very different in cover. You usually discover the difference the first day you use the policy — at claim time. Expats comparing Turkish quotes with what they knew at home face an extra challenge, because terms and names differ. This guide shows how to compare properly. To understand what drives the premium, see our English guide on what affects your casco premium.
Why price alone misleads
Kasko may look like a standard product, but each insurer’s package, conditions and extra services differ. If a quote looks cheaper, the reason is often a narrower cover, an added excess or a restricted workshop option. These are not bad faith; they are products designed for different needs. The problem is deciding without seeing the differences.
Build a comparison table
The easiest method is a simple table with every quote side by side under the same headings:
- Car value: on what value is the car insured?
- Excess: is there a condition making you pay part of the damage?
- Workshop condition: authorised dealer, contracted garage or other options?
- Parts policy: original or equivalent parts?
- Replacement car: is there one, under what conditions and for how long?
- Excess liability (ihtiyari mali mesuliyet): what extra limit applies for damage to others?
- Glass and lights: how is this damage paid?
- Roadside assistance: what does towing and assistance include?
- Personal accident: is there cover for people in the car?
- Legal protection: is legal support provided in a dispute?
Notice the difference between a cover missing entirely and one included with a limited limit. Even when the same heading appears in two quotes, limits, durations and conditions can differ. Rather than leaving a row blank, ask your adviser and fill it in.
The differences most often missed
- Excess conditions: excesses applied to certain damage types or driver groups can make small claims impractical.
- Workshop restriction: a policy limited to contracted garages may mean you cannot use the workshop you are used to.
- Earthquake, flood and similar natural disasters: check whether and on what terms these covers are included.
- Small extras such as lost keys or personal belongings: minor on their own, useful in daily life.
- Driver definition: who may drive the car matters when a family member uses it.
Define your own needs
The best kasko is not the same for every driver. If you drive for work every day, replacement car and roadside assistance may matter more. If your car is new and you want to stay with the brand’s authorised service, the workshop condition comes first. If you park outside, look harder at natural disaster and glass cover. Deciding on the few covers you cannot do without before you start makes the choice much easier. If several family members drive, add the driver definition and any conditions for young or newly licensed drivers.
Example: two quotes, two outcomes
Imagine two quotes at similar prices. The first includes authorised dealer repair, original parts and a replacement car; the second is limited to contracted garages, uses equivalent parts and has no replacement car. In daily life you notice nothing. But when your car sits in the workshop after an accident, the first policy keeps you mobile while with the second you find your own solution. Where and with which parts the repair is done differs too. There is no single right answer; if you rarely use the car, a replacement car may not matter. What counts is choosing with the differences in mind.
The summary on a quote screen does not always show every condition. For the quote you are about to choose, ask for the general and special conditions, and ask for an explanation of anything unclear — in English if you prefer. A good adviser does not avoid these questions.
Give the same, correct information
For the comparison to mean anything, every quote must be based on the same, correct information: use, accessories, claims history and driver details. Comparing quotes built on different information leads to the wrong answer, and incorrect information can cause problems at claim time. As an agency working with several insurers, we can place quotes side by side under the same headings and show you the differences clearly. See our comprehensive car insurance (kasko) in Maslak page.
