Insurance in Sarıyer Centre for Shops, Flats and Families
In Sarıyer's town centre many people live above their shop or let a flat. We plan the shop, the home and the car together as one family file.
Sarıyer’s centre, with its market street running down to the shore, small shops and apartment blocks from different decades, is where the district’s daily life happens. Here many people are both homeowners and shopkeepers: they live upstairs, run a business downstairs, or let out a flat. A growing number of foreign residents also rent here or have opened a café or small shop of their own. That is why, in the centre, it works better to look at insurance as the full set of risks of one household and one business rather than as separate policies.
Cover for shops in the bazaar
Grocer, bakery, pharmacy, café, clothing or hardware store: most businesses here are small and depend on the owner’s own work. A fire, a flood or a break-in can take away several days of income as well as the stock. When we set up business insurance, we answer these questions together:
- Do you own the shop or rent it? Responsibility for the building and the fit-out depends on this.
- Roughly what are your stock and fixtures worth? Declaring too little can leave the claim payment short as well.
- Do you keep cash or valuable goods in the till or the window?
- Could a customer be injured on your premises, creating liability to third parties?
Apartments: what comes after DASK
Some buildings in the centre are old, others new. Either way, DASK is compulsory for registered homes under Law No. 6305 and is requested for utility contracts and at the land registry. DASK only covers the building, against earthquake and up to a set limit. For contents, water damage from pipes, broken glass or burglary, home insurance needs to be considered separately. In older blocks, the age of the plumbing makes water damage cover more important.
When the shop and the home share a building
This common arrangement needs care. A fire or flood in the ground-floor shop can reach the flat upstairs; a pipe failing in the flat can soak the shop’s stock. If one person owns the whole building, its value may be written into both the shop and home policies unnecessarily, or into neither. Putting the two policies side by side and fixing the building, contents and stock values separately removes both the gap and the waste.
One file for the whole family
A situation we often see in Sarıyer: the shop policy was bought in one place, the home DASK in another, the car’s traffic insurance in a third, and none of the renewal dates are aligned. Once all policies are on one list, repeated cover and open risks become easy to spot, and we call you as renewals approach. A flat you let out is part of the same file: when tenants change, check that the DASK and home policy continue in your name and that the new tenant has cover for their own belongings. For shopkeepers planning to hand the business to their children, whose name the policies should be in is worth discussing before the transfer.
