Rumelihisarı and Bebek Insurance: Home, Health and Travel
Rumelihisarı and Bebek share Bosphorus homes, many tenants and frequent travellers. We cover home policies by building type, health networks and student travel.
Rumelihisarı is one of Sarıyer’s Bosphorus neighbourhoods, known for its historic fabric. Neighbouring Bebek belongs administratively to the Beşiktaş district, but because it borders Sarıyer and daily life flows between the two without a break, we cover them together here. What they share: homes facing the Bosphorus, buildings from different eras, a lively waterfront, and residents who travel often for work or study. Academics, international professionals and students from abroad make up a noticeable part of the community.
Homes on the Bosphorus: a policy to fit age and structure
Older buildings, restored houses and modern apartment blocks stand next to each other here, and each has different needs:
- Older and restored buildings: repairs can require specialist craftsmanship, so setting a realistic building value matters.
- Apartments: contents, water damage and liability towards neighbours come first.
- Tenants: the owner’s DASK and building policy do not cover your belongings; you need a separate policy for them.
DASK is compulsory for registered homes, but because it covers only the building and only up to a set limit, your contents and building value above the limit are protected with home insurance. If you own valuable items, listing and documenting them makes a claim easier. For young professionals and students renting small flats in the area, a simple home policy covering contents and liability to neighbours is often a sensible, practical start.
Health insurance: which hospitals do you use?
The most practical question when choosing health insurance is which hospitals you and your family prefer. If the policy’s contracted network does not include them, the policy may stay on paper. Complementary health insurance pays the extra fee at SGK-contracted private hospitals under the policy terms; private health insurance usually offers wider choice. The decision matters even more for freelancers, business owners and anyone without an employer scheme. Foreign residents should also check that the policy meets residence permit requirements. When starting a new policy, allow for the fact that waiting periods can apply to some cover, which is why it pays to insure before a need arises. If you already have a policy, renewing it without a break is the simplest way to keep the rights you have built up. Details: health insurance.
Travel for study, work and holidays
Many residents here travel frequently for work, and many young people go abroad to study or join exchange programmes. Travel health insurance is required for Schengen visa applications. Frequent travellers can consider an annual policy; for one-off trips, a policy matched to the length of the journey. For students heading off on an exchange or a longer course, the school or the destination country may set its own requirements, so reviewing the application documents together before buying a policy saves time.
