Car Stolen in Istanbul? The Kasko Theft Claim: Reporting, Documents and the Waiting Period
Walking back to where you parked and finding an empty space is one of the worst moments for any driver. Once the shock passes, the questions follow: will my kasko (comprehensive motor insurance) pay, and what exactly do I need to do? Theft is one of the core covers in a kasko policy, but a smooth claim depends heavily on the steps you take in the first hours and the documents you hand over. Below we set out the process in plain order, with a few notes for foreign residents.
First, make sure: towed or stolen?
Illegally parked cars are regularly towed in Istanbul. A quick check before reporting a theft saves unnecessary paperwork:
- Look for no-parking signs or towing notices where you left the car.
- Ask the security team of your residential complex, car park or office building.
- Confirm that no family member or colleague has taken the car.
If none of this explains it, move on to the next step without delay.
The first hours: report to the police, then your insurer
Go to the nearest police station (or the gendarmerie outside city areas) and have the theft recorded. This official record is the foundation of the claim; a theft claim cannot proceed without it. Give the plate number, chassis number, colour and any distinguishing features. If your Turkish is limited, bring someone who can help, or ask your agent how to prepare.
Straight after the police record, call your agent or insurer. Prompt notification is an obligation under kasko policies, and the time of your report is logged in the file. If the car has a tracking device, alert the tracking company and share the location with the police.
Documents you will usually need
The exact list varies by insurer and policy, but theft files typically require:
- The police or gendarmerie report showing when and how the theft was reported.
- All the car’s keys, including spares. Missing keys can slow down the review.
- The ruhsat (vehicle registration), or a note in your report if it was left in the car.
- ID and driving licence copies of the owner and the last driver. Foreign residents usually provide their passport or residence permit together with their foreign ID number (Yabancı Kimlik No).
- Loan or lien details if a bank has a pledge on the car, as this decides who is paid first.
Handing over every key matters. If a key was left in the car or in the ignition, the insurer’s approach depends on the policy terms, so it is worth checking in advance whether your kasko has a specific key clause.
Company cars and financed cars
For a company-registered car, an authorised signatory may need to sign the documents, and you should state clearly who drove the car last and who holds the keys. For a financed car, the bank must be informed and the payment order agreed with the insurer. Keep copies of everything you submit.
Why is there a waiting period?
Insurers do not pay theft claims immediately. They wait for a period set out in the policy to see whether the car is recovered. Because this period differs between insurers and policies, check your policy’s special conditions or ask your agent for the exact position.
During the waiting period you can:
- Complete any extra documents the insurer requests,
- Ask whether your replacement car cover also applies after theft,
- Inform your bank if the car is financed,
- Keep your contact details up to date so you can be reached if the car turns up.
If the car is found
Tell your insurer immediately. The file then becomes a damage claim: an expert inspects damage, missing parts and signs of forced entry, and assesses them under the policy. Do not send the car for repair before the expert has seen it.
If the car is not found
Once the waiting period ends, settlement begins. Ownership of the car is usually transferred to the insurer through a notary, and the payment is calculated on the valuation basis stated in your policy. If there is a bank loan, the lender may be paid first. For a wider view of what kasko covers, see this guide: what kasko (casco) insurance covers.
Stolen parts and attempted theft
Not every theft means losing the whole car. Mirrors, wheels, headlights or the infotainment unit may be removed, or a lock may be forced. The steps are similar: photograph the scene, get a police record and notify your insurer. How stolen parts are covered depends on the policy, and some accessories must be declared separately.
Practical ways to reduce the risk
- Keep the spare key at home, never in the car.
- Consider not leaving the original ruhsat in the car.
- Park in well-lit areas with cameras where possible.
- Tell your agent about any tracker or extra locking system when the policy is arranged.
