What Is the Renewal Guarantee (Lifetime Renewal) in Health Insurance?

Health insurance policies in Türkiye are mostly issued for one year. In theory this means the insurer can decide each year whether to renew and on what terms. As people get older, or after a serious diagnosis during the policy, this uncertainty becomes a real worry. The renewal guarantee, often called lifetime renewal (ömür boyu yenileme or yenileme güvencesi), exists to answer that worry. For expats planning to stay in Türkiye long term, it is one of the most important questions to ask when choosing a policy.

What is the renewal guarantee?

It is a commitment by the insurer that, for policyholders who meet certain conditions, it will not refuse renewal or add new exclusions because of conditions that arose during the policy. In short, you do not lose cover just because you became ill while insured.

It is not automatic in every policy. Which products offer it, how it is earned and exactly what it covers vary by insurer and by the general and special conditions. Asking about it is as important as comparing premiums, and its value grows with age: when you are young renewal rarely feels uncertain, but conditions that appear over the years can make each renewal of an unguaranteed policy a question mark.

How it is usually earned

  • A period of continuous cover with the same insurer
  • Renewing on time every year without a break
  • A complete and accurate health declaration at application
  • With some insurers, not exceeding an age limit when the right would be earned

The required period and age conditions vary by insurer; get them in writing for your own policy.

What it protects and what it does not

Usually protected

  • Renewal is not refused because of conditions that arose during the policy
  • No new exclusions are added later for those conditions

Usually not protected

  • Premium: The guarantee does not freeze the premium. Premiums may be reset each year based on age, general healthcare costs and the insurer’s pricing.
  • General terms: Changes applied to the product for all policyholders may apply to you too.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Conditions that existed before the policy and were excluded are not brought into cover.

An example

A policyholder who has been continuously insured with the same company for a long time and has earned the guarantee is diagnosed with a chronic condition during the policy year. At renewal the insurer renews without adding an exclusion, and treatment continues within the policy conditions. The premium does rise because of age and general pricing changes. Without the guarantee, the insurer could have proposed new terms at renewal under the policy conditions.

How the guarantee can be lost

  1. A break in cover: Missing the renewal date or a payment problem ending the policy.
  2. Switching insurer: The guarantee is usually tied to the insurer that granted it and generally does not transfer.
  3. Changing product or plan: Moving to a different product with the same insurer may lead to the right being reassessed.
  4. An inaccurate declaration coming to light: Missing or wrong information at application can put acquired rights in question.

When a premium rises, switching can be tempting. With a guaranteed policy it is usually wiser to first discuss options with the same insurer, such as adding a co-payment or reviewing extras, and to confirm in writing how any change affects the guarantee. Questions to ask and how we help

  • Does this product offer a renewal guarantee?
  • Under what conditions and when is it earned?
  • In what situations can it end once earned?
  • Does it apply to other family members on the policy?
  • Would a plan change affect it?

Do not rely on verbal answers; see them in the policy conditions or the insurer’s written information. Years from now, those documents are what you will rely on.
