Flight Delays and Missed Connections: What Can Travel Insurance Do?
Seeing the word delayed on the departures board can upset an entire trip, especially with a connecting flight. A missed connection can mean a hotel night, a new ticket, or a missed meeting or tour. Istanbul is a major hub, and many residents fly on connecting routes for work and family visits. The obvious question is whether travel insurance pays for any of this. The answer depends entirely on whether your policy includes such a cover and on its conditions. This guide explains the general framework and practical steps.
Not every travel policy covers delays
The basic travel health insurance required for visa applications is mainly designed for treatment costs from unexpected illness or accident abroad. Flight delay, missed connection, baggage delay or trip cancellation are usually separate covers: included in some packages, absent from others, or available as add-ons. Having travel insurance does not mean a delay is covered, so look for these headings individually in your policy summary. The logic of cancellation and baggage cover is explained in our sister site’s guide to trip cancellation and baggage cover.
Conditions to check in your policy
- Minimum delay: the cover may apply only after the delay exceeds a set period. Check the period in your policy.
- Cause of the delay: weather, technical faults or strikes may be treated differently.
- Types of expense: which costs are covered, such as accommodation, meals, transport or a new ticket.
- Connection time: how tickets were bought and whether a reasonable connection time was allowed may be considered.
- Exclusions: strikes announced in advance or known disruptions may be excluded.
Details vary by insurer and product. Do not assume a right that is not written in the policy.
The airline’s obligations versus insurance
Airlines may also have obligations to passengers when flights are delayed or cancelled, depending on where the flight departs and lands and the passenger rights rules that apply. Insurance cover and airline obligations are separate matters, and some policies state that any payment received from the airline will be taken into account. Check both the airline’s rules and your policy.
Scenario: one ticket or separate tickets
Suppose you fly from Istanbul to a distant city with a connection. If all flights are on one booking and the first delay makes you miss the connection, the airline generally takes responsibility for rebooking you. If you bought separate tickets from different airlines, the second airline has no link to the first delay, and the cost of a new ticket may fall on you. In that second case, whether your policy has a relevant cover becomes much more important.
When baggage is delayed too
Missed connections often come with delayed bags. Before leaving the airport, report it at the lost baggage desk and get a written record. Keep receipts for essentials you buy, and check whether baggage delay is a separate cover in your policy.
What to do at the airport
- Ask the airline desk for written confirmation of the delay or cancellation, with its length and cause.
- Keep boarding passes, e-tickets and booking confirmations.
- Get a receipt for every expense.
- Note any hotel, meal or alternative flight the airline offers.
- If your policy has an assistance line, call it and ask what to do.
Claiming on your return, and common mistakes
Submit your claim within the period stated in the policy. A file usually includes the policy details, tickets and boarding passes, the airline’s written confirmation and expense receipts.
- Not getting written confirmation of the delay from the airline
- Not keeping receipts
- Assuming delay cover exists without checking
- Flying on separate tickets with very short connection times
What to ask when choosing a policy
Ask whether the policy includes flight delay cover and after what period it applies, whether a missed connection is covered separately, how baggage delay and loss are handled, and whether cancellation and interruption are defined separately. If you fly often or on connecting routes, look beyond the medical cover.
