Travelling Within Türkiye: Do You Need Insurance and What Is Covered?

Travel insurance usually brings to mind trips abroad and visa applications. But what about a summer week on the Aegean coast, a stay in the Black Sea highlands or a long weekend in Cappadocia? For many expats living in Istanbul, exploring Türkiye is one of the best parts of life here. The short answer is that, in most cases, understanding how your existing policies work within Türkiye matters more than buying a new one. This guide looks at domestic travel from the angles of health, car, home and personal accident.

How your health cover works within Türkiye

If you are covered by SGK (the Social Security Institution), you can use the public health system when you need care. If you have private health insurance or complementary health insurance, the policy is generally valid across Türkiye, but the insurer’s network of contracted hospitals may be denser in Istanbul than in smaller towns. Many foreign residents hold a private policy bought for their residence permit; the same principle applies, so check how its network works outside Istanbul.

  • Check whether your policy has a contracted hospital or clinic where you are going.
  • With complementary health insurance, remember it covers the difference fee at SGK-contracted private hospitals under the policy conditions, so the hospital should be contracted both with SGK and with your insurer.
  • Make sure your insurance card or digital card is on your phone.
  • Save your insurer’s emergency or information line.

If you are driving

Many domestic holidays are road trips. Checking your motor insurance before a long drive tells you what to do if something goes wrong.

  1. Compulsory traffic insurance: required under Law No. 2918 (Highway Traffic Law). Make sure it does not expire during your holiday.
  2. Kasko (comprehensive motor insurance): if you have it, check whether roadside assistance, towing and a replacement car are included. These services and their conditions vary.
  3. Roadside assistance number: save it on your phone.
  4. Other drivers: check whether your policy restricts who may drive.

Leaving your home empty

A holiday means your home stands empty for days or weeks. If you have home insurance, check for special conditions on unoccupied homes. Locking windows and doors, turning off the water and asking a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on things reduce risk and make any claim easier. If you rent, remember that the landlord’s policy usually does not cover your belongings. Options are on our home insurance page.

Three domestic travel scenarios

A road trip to the Aegean

A family drives a long route in their own car. The key points are valid traffic insurance, roadside assistance under the kasko policy and whether every person taking the wheel is acceptable under the policy. On the health side, learn in advance how the family’s insurance is used in the holiday region.

A short city break by plane

For a few days in another city, extra insurance is often unnecessary. Keep your health card on your phone and know the contracted providers there. Read the cancellation terms for flights and hotels when you book.

A nature or adventure holiday

Rafting, highland hiking or camping raises the risk of accidents. Look at the organiser’s cover, your own health insurance and any personal accident cover together, so you know in advance who pays for what.

When a separate policy may make sense

Some insurers offer products for domestic travel that may include accidental injury, baggage or trip cancellation; scope varies by product. Consider one if you have paid for an expensive package tour, if you have no health cover at all, or if your trip includes adventure activities. We explain the logic of personal accident insurance in our sister site’s guide to personal accident insurance. Before buying, ask what the policy actually adds to the cover you already have.

Quick checklist before you set off

  • Do your traffic insurance and kasko end dates cover the trip?
  • Does your health policy have contracted providers where you are going?
  • Are the roadside and health helpline numbers saved?
  • Have you secured your home?
  • Have you read the tour or booking cancellation terms?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need travel health insurance for a holiday within Türkiye?
There is no legal requirement. If you are covered by SGK or have private health insurance, your existing cover usually applies within Türkiye. Checking your policy's network may be enough.
Is my residence-permit health insurance valid in other cities?
Private policies are generally valid across Türkiye, but the contracted network varies by city and treatment at a non-contracted provider is reimbursed under the policy conditions. Check your policy before travelling.
What if my traffic insurance expires while I am on holiday?
Traffic insurance is compulsory. Driving without it causes legal problems and serious financial risk in an accident. Check the end date before you leave and renew early if needed.
