Check-up and Preventive Health Cover: What Your Policy Includes and How to Use It
Most people think of health insurance as something you use when you are ill. Some policies, however, also cover general health checks and preventive services when you have no complaint at all. This cover often sits quietly in the policy and the year ends without it being used. This article explains check-up and preventive cover, how it differs from diagnostic tests and how to make good use of it. Which tests are right for you is always a matter for your doctor.
What is check-up cover?
Check-up cover pays for a routine health-check package taken without a specific complaint, simply to see your general health. The package content, how often it can be used and where it is valid vary by policy. Some insurers offer a fixed package; others allow a contracted hospital’s package within set rules.
Not every policy has it. It is more common in comprehensive private plans; simpler plans either leave it out or offer it as an optional extra.
Check-up versus diagnostic tests
This distinction causes the most confusion. When you see a doctor with a complaint, the blood tests or imaging they order are diagnostic and are assessed under your outpatient cover. The same tests done routinely, with no complaint, fall under check-up cover.
If your policy has no check-up cover, routine tests without a complaint are often not paid. And if you have check-up cover but have already used it for the period, further routine tests may also fall outside cover.
Example: same tests, two outcomes
Two friends have similar blood tests at the same hospital in the same week. The first has felt unusually tired and sees an internal medicine doctor, who orders the tests; they are paid under outpatient cover with the policy co-payment. The second has no complaint and asks for the tests out of curiosity; with no check-up cover, the cost is theirs. Same tests, same hospital, completely different insurance outcome. What decides it is not the test but the reason for it.
Preventive services you may see
Preventive cover differs by policy. Some include one or more of:
- A general check-up package
- Certain vaccinations
- Routine development checks for children
- Some screening tests for women’s and men’s health
- An annual dental or eye examination
This list is only an example; your special conditions and table of benefits show what your own policy includes.
Steps to use the cover well
- Read the table of benefits: Is there a check-up or preventive heading, and where and how often can it be used?
- Learn the package content: Ask which tests are included and how extra tests are assessed.
- Book through the right channel: Some policies allow check-ups only at hospitals the insurer directs you to, or with prior approval.
- Set a reminder near the end of the policy period for unused benefits.
- Review results with your doctor: If a check-up finds something, follow-up visits and tests are usually treated as diagnostic under outpatient cover.
How much weight should it carry?
Check-up cover is a welcome extra but should not drive your choice of policy. The main job of health insurance is to protect you against costly, unexpected treatment. Look first at inpatient and outpatient cover, the hospital network and exclusions; if those are solid, treat check-up cover as a bonus.
If you work in one of Maslak’s office towers, your employer’s group policy may already include a check-up. Knowing what it offers before buying an individual policy lets the two complement each other rather than overlap. For families, routine checks for children or regular screening may make a plan that includes them easier to budget for.
