Green Card Checks at the Land Border: What to Carry and Common Problems

When you drive out of Türkiye, the land border crossing is where waiting is most likely. Alongside passport and customs checks, you may be asked about the car’s insurance. The green card replaces compulsory traffic insurance in countries that are members of the Green Card system, so officials in the country you enter may want to see it as proof that your car is insured. This guide explains what to prepare so the check goes smoothly.

Why the green card is checked

Every motor vehicle entering a country is expected to be insured against damage it may cause there. The green card shows this with an internationally recognised document. For vehicles without one, or with a card that is not valid in that country, some countries may require insurance to be bought at the border, and in some cases entry may become a problem. Practice varies between crossings, so confirm current requirements with official sources and your agency.

Checks are not limited to entry. Your documents may also be requested at transit borders, at roadside checks and when you return to Türkiye. Keep the green card in the car next to the registration document for the whole trip.

What to carry

Put these documents in one folder before you reach the border:

1. A printed green card: a phone copy is handy, but a printed document may be requested.
2. The original registration document (ruhsat): it may be compared with the plate and vehicle details on the card.
3. Driving licence and passport: with a visa if required. Foreign residents should also carry their Turkish residence permit.
4. Permission if the car is not yours: a notarised power of attorney or letter of consent from the owner.
5. Travel health insurance policy: especially if it was required for your visa.
6. An accident report form: useful if something happens on the road.

Common problems at the border

The card has not started yet

Drivers who set off early can reach the border before the card’s start date, when it is not yet valid. Choose the start date together with your departure plan.

A country outside the cover

If the box for your destination or a transit country is crossed out, the card may not be valid there. Check every country on the route before you leave.

Plate or vehicle details do not match

The plate on the card must match the ruhsat exactly. If the plate was changed, a card issued with the old details can cause trouble.

Unreadable or incomplete documents

A faded print, a worn paper or only a screenshot can slow the check down. Carry a clear print and a backup.

Someone else’s car

Without the owner’s permission for a rental, leased or company car, you may not be able to continue. Prepare it together with the green card.

Trailers and caravans

If you tow a trailer or caravan, its insurance status may also be asked about. Tell your agency about it in advance.

How to handle the check

Being calm and prepared speeds things up. Hand over the documents together, answer questions briefly, and if something seems to be missing, show a digital copy and call your agency to resend it quickly. If there is a problem, find out exactly what is needed before leaving the booth: a missing document, different insurance or a correction.

• Do the card’s dates cover your departure and return?
• Are all countries on the route valid on the card?
