Insurance Agency or Buying Direct from the Insurer? How Working with an Agency Helps

If you have recently moved to Istanbul, one of the first practical questions about insurance is where to buy it. Broadly, there are two routes: buy the policy directly from an insurance company, or buy it through an insurance agency. Either way, the policy you receive is issued by an insurance company. The difference lies in how you get to that policy and who you deal with while it is in force. This guide explains what an agency does, how the two routes compare and what to check before working with an agency.

What does an insurance agency actually do?

An insurance agency in Turkey is an authorised intermediary that prepares quotes, issues policies and supports policyholders on behalf of the insurance companies it has agreements with. The agency does not replace the insurer: the insurer provides the cover and pays the claim. The agency’s role is to understand your needs, find suitable cover and keep communication between you and the insurer running smoothly.

An agency that works with several insurers can prepare quotes from different companies using the same information. That lets you compare not only the premium but also the cover, deductibles and service network side by side. Agencies are generally paid through commission from the insurers on the policies they arrange. Whichever route you take, always ask to see the total premium, payment terms and list of covers in writing.

Buying direct versus buying through an agency

Buying directly from an insurer can be practical if you already know its products and your needs are simple. Working with an agency usually makes a difference in these areas:

  • Comparison: you see quotes from several insurers instead of just one.
  • A named contact: you reach a person you know when you need to ask a question, change something or report a claim.
  • Follow-up: the agency can remind you about renewal dates, missing documents and policy changes.
  • Everything in one place: keeping your traffic insurance, kasko (comprehensive motor insurance), DASK (compulsory earthquake insurance), home and health policies with one agency makes the overall picture easier to see.
  • Claims support: you can ask which documents are needed and where your file stands.

Both routes are legitimate. What matters is that the policy fits your needs and that you know whom to call when something goes wrong.

When an agency helps most

An agency adds the most value as policies get more complex and claims become more likely. In a comprehensive car insurance quote, for example, items such as a replacement car, glass damage, contracted garages or deductibles vary between insurers. Someone who explains these items stops you from deciding on price alone.

For newcomers there is an extra layer: policy wordings are in Turkish, and terms such as special conditions or endorsements are not always intuitive. Having someone walk you through the document in plain English reduces the risk of misunderstandings later.

How the difference shows at claim time

A claim is when insurance is really tested. After an accident, a water leak or a burglary, not knowing what to do adds stress. Your agency can explain how to notify the claim, which documents are required and how the loss adjuster process works, and can help with correspondence. The claim decision itself is always made by the insurer under the policy conditions.

Questions to ask before choosing an agency

  1. How many insurers do you work with, and can you show me quotes side by side?
  2. Whom do I contact if I have a claim, and through which channel?
  3. Do you remind clients about renewal dates?
  4. Can you explain each cover and deductible in the quote, in English if needed?
  5. Can I visit your office, or do we handle everything by phone?

Also check that the agency is authorised, which insurer issues your policy, and that you receive the policy document itself.

Agency versus broker

Besides agencies, there are also insurance brokers. Roughly speaking, an agency acts on behalf of the insurers it represents, while a broker looks for cover on behalf of the client. Many personal and small business policies are arranged through agencies. Whoever you work with, always know the name of the insurer and your policy number.

Your part of the relationship

Good cooperation works both ways. For an accurate quote, share complete and correct information: how you use your car, the features of your home, your business activity or your health declaration. Incomplete or incorrect information can affect a claim payment. If your address, car, drivers or business activity changes during the policy term, tell your agency so the policy stays up to date. If you hold a residence permit, keep your foreign ID number (Yabancı Kimlik No) handy, as it is used on most policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the cover different if I buy through an agency?
In both cases the policy is issued by the insurer, and the cover depends on the product and policy conditions you choose. The difference is in getting quotes, comparing them and support during the policy term.
Does the agency pay my claim?
No. The insurer decides on and pays the claim. The agency guides you on notification, documents and follow-up.
Can I buy insurance as a foreigner living in Istanbul?
Yes. Foreign residents can buy car, home, health and business insurance. Your foreign ID number or passport details are used on the policy, depending on the product.
