Insurance for Commercial Vehicles: A Guide for Taxi, Minibus and Van Owners
For their owners, taxis, minibuses, vans and pickups are not just transport; they are a direct source of income. These vehicles spend far more time in traffic, carry more passengers or goods and, when they are off the road after an accident, the business stops too. That is why commercial vehicle insurance should be approached differently from private car insurance. This guide collects the main points for commercial vehicle owners, including foreign entrepreneurs running small businesses in Istanbul.
Rule one: declare the use correctly
How a vehicle is used is basic information in motor insurance. The use stated on the ruhsat (vehicle registration), the actual work the vehicle does and the policy must all match. Using a vehicle insured as private for commercial purposes can lead to serious problems at claim time, such as a reduced or refused payment.
Review your declaration especially if:
- You have started using your private car regularly to carry goods or passengers,
- You have rented the vehicle to another business or run it on behalf of one,
- You have added work equipment, a cargo body or fittings to the vehicle.
Traffic insurance: compulsory but not always enough
Compulsory traffic insurance under Law No. 2918, the Highway Traffic Law, also applies to commercial vehicles and pays for damage to third parties within the policy limits. Because commercial vehicles spend longer in traffic and often carry other people, the risk of damage exceeding those limits is more real, so İMM (voluntary excess liability) cover is particularly important.
Certain activities, such as carrying passengers, may also require additional compulsory insurance under the regulations. Check with your agency that all compulsory policies for your activity are in place. For the basics, see our traffic insurance in Maslak page.
What to look for in commercial kasko
- Garage and repair time: Which garages repair the vehicle and how approval works determine how long it is off the road.
- Replacement vehicle or loss of income support: Some products have different arrangements for commercial vehicles; if not, decide knowing that.
- Extra equipment: A taximeter, refrigeration unit, cargo body or racking may need to be declared and covered separately.
- Driver definition: If several drivers use the vehicle, find out how the policy handles this.
- Deductibles: Deductible and co-payment conditions may be more common in commercial products.
- Roadside assistance: For a vehicle on the road all day, towing and on-the-spot help matter a great deal.
Goods and passengers on board
Kasko covers the vehicle itself; traffic insurance and İMM cover damage to third parties. Goods carried in the vehicle are generally outside motor insurance and are covered by different products. For drivers and passengers, consider personal accident covers that can be added to kasko. Clarifying which risk is covered by which policy is the best way to spot gaps.
Keeping the business running after a claim
The biggest loss is often not the repair bill but the days the vehicle cannot work. Complete the accident report at the scene and take photos straight away; report the claim promptly and keep documents ready for a quick expert inspection; choose in advance a garage that fits your policy and knows commercial vehicles; and if you run several vehicles, have a backup plan for when one is off the road. Make sure your drivers know these steps too. If the registered owner and the actual operator differ, agree in advance whose name the policy is in and who receives claim payments.
If you run several vehicles
For small businesses with vans or minibuses, tracking policy expiry, registration and inspection dates on one list is a big help. Making sure every vehicle is insured with the right use and correct information avoids surprises. For your business’s non-vehicle risks, see our business insurance in Maslak page.
